I am blessed to be the first grade teacher at Montini Catholic School. First grade is a magical year filled with many exciting changes and growth both academically and socially. Our literacy curriculum follows the Superkids reading program. By building on what they learned in kindergarten, first graders learn more complex letter-sound relationships, reading comprehension and fluency. They apply these new skills to both their reading and writing on a daily basis. Math exploration is also a big part of our day. First graders begin to grasp more abstract math concepts and master addition and subtraction facts through the use of many hands-on materials. There is so much to explore and learn throughout first grade - math, reading, writing, science, social studies and social skills. But the best part is being able to experience it all in a faith-filled environment!

The 3rd grade curriculum not only creates a desire to want to learn more about God, others, and the wonderful things in our world, we also strive for being more responsible. In religion, our curriculum is based on following the Apostles Creed. We will make connections between the Old and New Testaments to better understand the Holy Trinity. As the oldest students in the building, we welcome the chance to serve as church leaders at weekly Mass. Language Arts finds us reading a great deal of wonderful books that take us on many thrilling adventures. We incorporate spelling, grammar, writing, and comprehension into our reading as we embark on each new story. Throughout the course of the year, we will also be introduced to novels. There is a strong emphasis in math in third grade. We not only reinforce regrouping of addition and subtraction, our main focus is multiplication. We will spend many weeks practicing and memorizing multiplication facts. We will also get into multiplication with regrouping, division and long division. Social Studies is structured around communities. We learn about our own community and then we grow to learn about communities around our nation, as well as well as communities around the world. Through our study of communities we see how society works to help others learn about the Gospel of the Lord. Science has very exciting units! We learn about space, the planets, even space travel. Then, we explore Earth and its composition. After that, the forces of nature and weather. FInally, we take an inside look at the human bodies and how God has created us to be images of himself. We learn we are truly miracles made by God!
